Rayman Bowling

Rayman, French console developer Ubisoft's limbless action hero, may not be the first franchise character you'd pick to be a crack bowler--but it turns out that the spunky magical torso has rolled a strike this time around. RB's comical gameplay touches and cartoony graphics put a novel spin on an old genre, offering a good play for fans of the pine alleyway.

All the rules are the same as traditional bowling--10 rounds, splits, spares and strikes--and the 3D-esque viewpoint helps to maintain the real-life look of the game. The chief difference is that to progress to the next alley you have to reach a certain minimum score, like 120 points on the first stage.

Sexy Poker 2004

While I enjoy playing games on my mobile phone, reviewing Sexy Poker 2004 was not quite as easy... I couldnt just play it anytime I like, especially in a crowded train ride with ladies around. Nevertheless, I managed.

Youll have to be patient when starting this game as it took me 40 seconds to wait for the menu page, and another 20 seconds to start a game. But youll find this wait worthwhile.

Speed Devils

Gameloft has resurrected Speed Devils--a frenetic racer that Ubisoft released on the Dreamcast back in 1999--in mobile form. This new mobile version is a decent little driving game, but it offers a more superficial play than the original.

Speed has two play modes and four American locales. Other aggressive drivers appear along the way to the finish line, but each contest usually represents a race against the clock. The cool natural disasters of the original offering are nowhere to be found, but Gameloft was able to keep in the weaponry of its forefather, thus making the game a meaner version of Sega's classic Outrun.

Turbo boosts and missiles can be found on the course, or they can be purchased in the item store when in career mode. Grabbing a boost will give you about five seconds of extra speed that can be used at any time. A flame wand shows the amount of boost left, and pressing the 3 key will make fire shoot out from under your car tires. Missiles come in packs of two and are used to literally destroy the competition.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

The old adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" likely gets tossed around a lot in mobile development studios. Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Chaos theory is a modest update to one of the best games of last year, and it is therefore a terrific--if familiar--experience. While, like its console brethren, Chaos Theory has been tipped a little toward the action side of stealth action, its core gameplay could hardly be called a departure from that of Pandora Tomorrow. If you've played previous Splinter Cell iterations, you'll find Chaos Theory to be an incremental update, with better graphics and a few new toys for Sam Fisher.

Vijay Singh Pro Golf

While other games let you play as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh Pro Golf 2005 simulates the experience of being the unseated champ by letting you lose repeatedly to Vijay Singh. Gameloft's last golf effort starred Ubisoft's lovable mascot Rayman, making Pro Golf 2005 the company's first foray into simulation-style golf. While Vijay himself would vouch for the importance of experience over innate ability, Gameloft's raw talent has once again served the developer and the consumer well, as it has crafted one of the best games of golf available on mobile. Pro Golf 2005 looks and plays like the best console golf sims of the 16-bit era, while thankfully sparing you Vijay's unpopular postgame commentary.

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds outlines the duel between Earth and an invading alien civilization--a tale that, when originally released in 1898, set the standard of hostile-alien-based sci-fi for years to come. The game takes its source material quite seriously, and although there's no reference to any of the characters from the 2005 movie, the overall design of the game is in sync with this updated release. In the game, you control an alien tripod through 13 2D environments, shooting and bombing your way through all of humankind's best defensive efforts. Each level culminates with a boss fight, making the game fairly long for a mobile action game. The best aspect of the game is the depth with which it approaches 2D shooting, although the shooting itself has the tendency to feel sluggish from time to time. Still, even if it's not quite perfect, War of the Worlds is a deep, beautiful game.

XIII Game for Mobile

The fine folks at Gameloft are indomitably can-do when it comes to porting console titles to mobile, and they've done their usual stellar job with Ubisoft's cel-shaded smash hit. Thanks to Gameloft's porting chops, XIII has made the transition from first-person shooter to mobile side-scroller with little degradation in entertainment value.

2005 Real Football

Trying to capture the essence of the beautiful game and bottling it up in a mobile phone game is a difficult thing to achieve. The excitement of match day, the thrill of scoring a goal and the passion of the crowd is something special, as are half-time pies and taunting the opposition with tasteless chants. In 2005 Real Football, great effort has been made to generate this kind of realistic atmosphere, as well as offer a very competent simulation that longs to be played with your kicking boots on.
It all starts with the great presentation, with slick menus offering various exhibition, cup and league games to enter with your chosen club and country. If you'd like to create your own team there's an edit feature to put in the names of individual players and you can even come up with a funny name for your manager, say Hubert Tinklebottom. Thanks to the game's FIFPRO license, you'll even come across the familiar names of your favourite players. Terry Henry, we bid you good night.
